Felix Gonzalez-Torres used ordinary materials to extraordinary ends. Throughout his career, the artist made more than twenty light-string works, which vary from one another in the number of bulbs and in the form they take when installed: they can be suspended or draped at the discretion of their respective owners. Over the course of any given installation, some bulbs are sure to burn out. The ephemeral nature of the materials imbues the work with a certain melancholy.
