Avery Coonley Playhouse: Triptych Window, 1912

Frank Lloyd Wright

The Art Institute of Chicago

Wright was famously inspired to create one of his most lively and modern designs for stained glass after watching a parade. In this triptych window for a children’s playhouse in suburban Chicago, Wright’s brightly colored and abstracted references to the American flag, balloons, and confetti seem to float in space within a rigorous and asymmetrical geometry that was common to all of his Prairie School houses.
