Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs are characterized by a striking marriage of classical forms and provocative, sexualized content. This image expresses the artist’s fascination with the sculptural body and using harmonious, geometric compositions. Playing with extremes of light and dark, Mapplethorpe staged a formal juxtaposition that uses the full tonal range of the gelatin silver print. One of the most controversial artists of his generation, Mapplethorpe has come to represent many of the aesthetic and social touchstones of the 1970s and 1980s.
