The Icebergs, 1861 Art Map Location #06

Frederic Edwin Church

Dallas Museum of Art

When this splendid painting went on view in 1861 in New York, critics thrilled to this dramatic scene, which was based on sketches Church made during a month long boat trip off the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. Although undeniably a masterpiece, The Icebergs was lost from view for more than a century. After the painting’s successful exhibition in England in 1863, Sir Edward William Watkin, a British railroad baron, purchased it. Thereafter largely forgotten, the canvas wound up in the collection of an English school before being triumphantly rediscovered in 1979.
